The iconic Wembley arch illumated red, white and blue. The tricolore adopted by thousands inside the stadium. Together as one. The football world united against terrorism 4 days removed from the attrocities in Paris; it says a lot about the power of sport. To quote one of the world’s greatest ever minds, Mandela said: ‘Sport has the power to change the world. It has the power to inspire. It has the power to unite people in a way that little else does. Sport can awaken hope where there was previously only despair’. Tonight has proven to be a true example of this power.
All of this said, as two sets of passionate fans sang la marseillaise to honour and remember the victims of the attacks, two further internationals were called off due to security threats. More attacks had been planned, and fortunately thwarted. The war on terror however, is intensifying and tonight’s football match was a great platform to make such a stand. United against Terrorism.
