Dons Close In

A first half header from Welsh International Simon Church lifted Aberdeen to a crucial 1-0 victory over bottom side Dundee United; but maybe even more importantly closed the gap to leaders Celtic to only 4 points. A far from straightforward game saw Dons manager Derek McInnes sent to the stand as well goalkeeper Scott Brown produce several good saves in what could be a key victory for the title challengers. For United, the result leaves them 8 points behind Kilmarnock with a game in hand over the Ayrshire club. However, recent results and performances from the Taysider’s should give them belief that they can yet still survive, especially looking at Kilmarnock’s current plight.
The opportunity for Aberdeen to close the gap came on the back of a second straight draw for the league leaders. Celtic dropped a further 2 points at home to a patched- up Dundee side, and in doing so looked extremely uninspiring. The fans are turning on Ronny Delia’s side, with the manager admitting afterwards that further performances of that nature will cost Celtic the title. They have, however, an opportunity to get their mind off league business this weekend when Morton visit in the Scottish Cup.
Elsewhere, Partick Thistle gave themselves a huge boost in the race for the top six, defeating St. Johnstone 2-1 at McDiarmid Park.
